Books you need as a student or resident

1.  Sanford Guide:   Absolutely essential to learn the bugs and drugs (see chart around page 52 or so) and to know the most recent recommendations to treat every type of infection.

2.  MPR (take one from a doctors office) or palm drugs program like epocrates.  Do not use the pocket Tarascon until you are at least an intern; there is not enough information there.

3.  Essentials of Musculoskeletal Care 3rd Edition with DVD   For those with an interest in physical medicine, this is great.  It has a DVD with joint injection video clips, pages describing the necessary equipment needed for each different injection, all the most common musculoskeletal disorders, including feet and children.  Really an excellent book.

4. David Rakel's Integrative Medicine book is great for those interested in holistic and integrative medicine.

5.  Washington Manual is a great book that is brief but gives you what you need, when you are in the hospital on internal medicine.

6.  www.emedicine.com is really an awesome resource.  I use it for everything!

7.  Habif's Atlas of Dermatology is excellent if you really have a strong interest in dermatology.  If you just want a handbook, Fitzpatrick is really very good, with lots of pictures, good information, and is plenty for the average non-dermatologist.  It's also smaller and easier to carry.  Habif is as big as a textbook.
