Know Thyself: Introduction, and The Physical Body

Affirmation:

Father, as we seek to see and know your face, may we each, as individuals and as a group, come to know ourselves, even as we are known, that we- as lights in You- may give the better concept of your Spirit in this world.

OR

Father, as we seek to see and know Your Face, may we get to know ourselves even as we are known by others. Since we are lights in You, may we may fully represent (to the world) the truth about who You are.

Introduction

Do you know yourself? Difficult question. We all know that there are many talents, abilities, emotions, and experiences deep within us but we just can’t seem to tap into them. If we knew ourselves completely, it would completely change our perspectives. We would understand the purpose of our bodies and of our lives. Knowing ourselves is a major step if we want to develop spiritually.

First, we must be willing to be measured; not by what we have, but by what we give of ourselves.

“And so, dear brothers and sisters,I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.” (Rom 12:1 NLT)

By what standard should we measure ourselves? We must choose that standard; not an earthly standard given by anyone, but that which we know deep inside to be our ideal; that highest standard that we can imagine. The ideal was set by Christ. Who do you believe in?! Who is your god?! KNOW who you believe in, KNOW who is your God; then ACT that way!

The Physical Body

Know yourself to be Body, Mind, and Spirit. We must become aware of all three aspects of ourselves. To know ourselves, we must surrender ourselves to His keeping. We must sincerely and persistently ask in prayer and then in meditation, willing to be purified, willing to break down the walls of pride and selfishness- willing to know the truth about ourselves, both good and bad. We must be willing to serve others. Remember, Lose yourself in Him, and find yourself in service.

As entities, our body, mind, and spirit are closely interrelated. Anything that happens in one, affects the other two. Our minds are especially interrelated to our bodies and our souls, because what we think about, we become, both physically and spiritually. Yet we have physical desires, and these express themselves in our bodies. We will learn how to Spiritualize those desires.

“Do you not know that your body is the temple (the very sanctuary) of the Holy Spirit Who lives within you, Whom you have received [as a Gift] from God?” (1Cor 6:19 AMP). Wow. God chooses our bodies to be His Holy Temples. Our bodies should function harmoniously, and each part is important and holy. Our physical bodies are a material representation of our inner selves. Our inner self is expressed in our physical bodies. All of our impressions and experiences are stamped on our souls, and this manifests in our physical bodies.

Activities this week:

Who am I, physically, mentally, and Spiritually?

Do I consider what others think of me as an insult or as an opportunity to know myself more?

This week, be aware of yourself, and what others think of you. Be willing to live like a child of God.

Choose to desire to know yourself more deeply.

Choose to desire to know God more.

Choose to desire that your body would be only for God.

Remember that your body is the place where God resides.

Remember, what you constantly think about, you become.

If you seem to have any negative experience, ask yourself, “what part of myself created this situation? What do I need to learn through this experience?”
