About Injection Sclerotherapy:

Injection Sclerotherapy is the medical procedure we use to eliminate varicose veins and spider veins. Sclerotherapy involves an injection of a solution of STD, or sotradecol, directly into the vein. This irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to swell and stick together. Over the next few weeks, the vein turns into scar tissue and dissolves, fading from view.

Sclerotherapy is a well-proven procedure and has been in use since the 1930s. Prior to the procedure, you will have an initial consultation with Dr. Moses, who will decide if you’re a good candidate for the procedure. Before the procedure, do not take any aspirin, ibuprofen, or naprosyn.

On the day of your procedure, (usually the same day as your consultation), the solution is injected through a very fine 30 gauge needle, directly into the vein. You may experience mild discomfort, but most patients tolerate it very well. For larger veins, you may have some cramping for a minute or two. Sessions last 15 minutes.

The number of veins injected in one session depends on the size and location of the veins. After the procedure, do not do any aerobic activity for a few days. You can drive yourself home, and walking is encouraged. For larger veins, we may recommend wearing support stockings. You can shower the same day, also.

Most common side effects are some bruising or irritation at the injection site. These will be discussed in detail with Dr. Moses before performing the procedure. Most people do not experience any side effects, and tolerate the procedure very well.
